After a long hiatus, we have returned with a new event of nearly 50 year-old media.
On Tuesday, May 28, we are again teaming up with the Sprocket Society to present some old-timey dirty movies. We cannot divulge the titles as they come from private collections. But what we can say is that on May 28, we will be presenting the kind of film program that would be watched in small venues that catered to the “raincoat” crowd in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but in a larger and less seedy atmosphere.
We will be showing two short films from the 1960s, before a very low-budget 1973 feature. Personally, I have a soft-spot for the erotica of the 60s and early 70s as there’s a palpable optimism and experimental ambition to these films that have largely languished in trash bins or forgotten in attics. And the narratives that quickly became the over-used, but always amusing, tropes of pornographic films were new.
16mm SMUT SHOW II: Peace, Love, & Hardcore
- 80 min, 16mm celluloid
- 7pm Tuesday, May 28
- only at the Grand Illusion Cinema
- Tickets available 30min prior to show. $10 (general admission) Cash only.
Boogie down to the theater for a secret 1970s feature film with one of the foxiest far-out stars of the era. This low budget artifact captures the spirit of the months following the breakout success of Behind the Green Door and Deep Throat, when everyone was attempting to capitalize on the emergence of the Golden Age. What this film lacks in glitz and polish, more than makes up for in fun and enthusiasm. The feature will follow a selection of short nudie films that appear to be made in the time of the summer of love. All on groovy 16mm!
